Brandywine Hundred Lawmakers Host Emergency Preparedness Meeting
Contact: Stephanie Mantegna, House of Representatives, 302-577-8515
State Representative Gregory F. Lavelle (R-Sharpley) and State Senator Catherine Cloutier (R-Heatherbrooke) hosted an emergency preparedness town meeting on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at Maple Lane Elementary in Claymont. Invited guests included representatives from the Red Cross, Delmarva Power, the New Castle County Emergency Preparedness Office and the Delaware Emergency Management Agency who made presentations on what each household needs to know in the event of an emergency or disaster. Rep. Lavelle said, “Senator Cloutier and I decided to invite the representatives from the various agencies to provide more practical advice and information on what to do in the event of an emergency or disaster. It's important to know how best to be prepared in the event a Hurricane Katrina-type emergency occurs in New Castle County. We wanted the discussion to center on things such as, how many hours should a family be prepared to survive on its own before the first responders arrive, how much water and food should a family have on hand, how long before bottled water expires—things of that nature. I think the meeting was very informative and and was thrilled with the turnout. I hope to hold a similar event in the spring.”
