State Representative Greg Lavelle Announces He Is Voting “No” On This Year’s Budget Bill

Rep. Lavelle attributes the 5.6% pay increase included in the budget as his reason for casting a “no” vote

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 30, 2006
Contract: Stephanie Mantegna, House of Representatives, 302-577-8515

State Representative Gregory F. Lavelle (R-Sharpley) today announced that he will be voting against the Fiscal Year 2007 Budget Bill that contains a 5.6% pay increase for legislators.

Rep. Lavelle is one of several of his colleagues who are opposed to the $2,250 pay raise being included in the budget. Rep. Lavelle is planning to donate the amount of the increase to five local charities—Epilepsy Foundation of Delaware, the Claymont Community Center, the Ronald McDonald House, Easter Seals Delaware and the Claymont Historical Society.

Rep. Lavelle stated, “I am voting against the budget today because I am not in favor of the way pay raises for legislators are handled by the General Assembly. Any pay increase should be voted on separately and not embedded in a 250-page document that does not get voted on until the final days, sometimes hours, of the legislative session. There has to be a better mechanism for calculating pay increases for lawmakers, other than how they are decided under the current system, which, in my opinion, is broken.”

Rep. Lavelle said that he is supporting reform initiatives addressing legislative pay increases that have been approved by the House and remain pending in the State Senate. One of the bills he has voted in favor of abolishes the Delaware Compensation Commission, which is responsible for calculating pay raises every four years for elected officials and members of the judiciary.
