State Representative Greg Lavelle Will Again This Year Donate His Legislative Pay Raise To Charity
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 6, 2007
Contact: Stephanie Mantegna, House of Representatives, 302-577-8515
stephanie.mantegna@state.de.us
State Representative Gregory F. Lavelle (R-Sharpley) today announced that he will again this year donate to local charities a 5.6% pay increase for legislators set in place as part of last year's (2006-2007) budget.
Rep. Lavelle is one of several of his colleagues who opposed the $2,250 pay raise included in last year's budget, casting a "no" vote on the spending plan because of the pay increase and increased spending across the budget. Rep. Lavelle is planning to donate the amount of the increase to five local charities - Epilepsy Foundation of Delaware, the Claymont Community Center, the Ronald McDonald House, Nativity Preparatory School in Wilmington and the Claymont Historical Society. Rep. Lavelle stated, "The Compensation Commission remains in place for legislators and it should be done away with. I continue to be philosophically against the way pay raises for legislators are handled by the General Assembly and many of my colleagues share that view. There is a better mechanism for calculating pay increases for lawmakers, other than how they are decided under the current system, which, in my opinion, is broken."
Rep. Lavelle said that he is supporting a reform initiative in the General Assembly that would address legislative pay increases. One measure, House Bill 2, has been approved by the House and remains pending in the State Senate. The legislation changes to advisory only the recommendations made by the Delaware Compensation Commission, currently responsible for calculating pay raises every four years for elected officials and members of the judiciary. The bill states that legislators would be subject to the same manner in which pay raises are determined for all other state employees through the annual budget process.
Rep. Lavelle also said, "This issue is not going away. We can fix it next year or fight about it again in January 2009."
