Rep. Greg Lavelle says “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
He commends the Governor’s decision to place the state’s checkbook online. Representative Greg Lavelle today congratulated Governor Jack Markell for adopting the terms of House Bill 86 that will result in putting the state’s checkbook online. “When Senate Bill 187 and House Bill 336 were introduced last year by then-Senator Charlie Copeland and me, the idea was greeted by skeptics as being expensive and useless. Concerns about cost and privacy were smoke screens instead of legitimate policy issues. I am glad to see that Governor Markell has adopted this spending transparency issue so the taxpayers of Delaware can better track how their money is spent,” said Representative Lavelle. Rep. Lavelle’s legislation – House Bill 86 – was introduced in March along with four other spending transparency initiatives. The bill is currently in the House Administration Committee awaiting a hearing. “While I am glad the Governor has done this, HB 86 still needs to be passed by both chambers so this practice becomes law and lasts beyond Governor Markell. I am also glad to see that the Governor is working on a searchable data base for state spending. This is what another bill – House Bill 90 – is all about and that legislation is also collecting dust in the House Administration Committee,” said Rep. Lavelle. Representative Lavelle gave his thanks to former Senator Copeland and Dave Burris of the Delaware Taxpayer Coalition. “Good ideas are certainly not restricted to this building and Charlie and Dave have advocated for these issues for years and I appreciate their help,” said Rep. Lavelle. ###
